This ancient practice from China combines simple postures and Taoist Longevity Breathing techniques to progressively open the body's energy channels. It is based on the energy techniques and internal awareness principles of chi gung (qigong) and Taoist Meditation, with the focus on allowing chi to flow. Although some of the postures of Taoist Yoga may appear similar to postures found in Hatha yoga, Taoist Yoga is an internal form of yoga that orginated as another way to prepare the mind and body for Taoist meditation.
The next time you step onto your yoga mat (or begin any activity), ask yourself the following questions about your practice:
Does it awaken the energy inside your body?
Will it make you aware of what's inside of you?
Can it be done in a way that may release tension and not lock it into the body?
Will it open your spirit?
Learn to cultivate your internal awareness by learning to feel what's deep inside your body. This training currently introduces the foundation "seats" of Taoist Yoga and basic Longevity Breathing (Taoist breathing) techniques.
This lineage of Taoist Yoga comes to us directly from Bruce Frantzis, a Taoist Lineage Holder, as part of his training as a Taoist priest in China. He calls his method of teaching these ancient practices Longevity Breathing Yoga.
